Supporting the Search for Samba: Drone Technology in Action
Direct Enviro Services deployed its specialist drone team to support the search for Samba, the young capybara who escaped from Marwell Zoo and captured national attention.
A Rapid Response from Our Drone Team
After reports confirmed that thermal drones were already being used in the search, our UAS Drone Survey Technician Dave Lowe stepped forward to offer additional support. Drawing on the same advanced thermal drone technology typically used in ecological surveys, the team mobilised quickly to assist in covering ground efficiently and with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.
Thermal Technology for Sensitive Wildlife Searches
Focusing on an area where Samba had reportedly been seen, our team carried out a detailed aerial thermal survey. Using live dual-screen monitoring, they were able to scan a wide area in real time, ensuring thorough coverage while maintaining a safe and controlled operation.
The detailed search results showed that there was no positive identification of Samba in that location. This data was then fed back to Marwell Zoo, helping their team refine and guide the ongoing search efforts.
Where Technology Meets Ecology
This situation highlights exactly where next-generation ecological technology can make a meaningful difference. Whether supporting wildlife searches, conducting bat survey, or monitoring habitats, thermal drone systems allow us to:
- Cover large and challenging terrain quickly
- Reduce disturbance to wildlife and habitats
- Provide accurate, real-time data to inform decisions
As part of our wider commitment to innovation, sustainability and biodiversity, these tools play a key role in how we support clients and communities alike.
About Capybaras
The Capybara is the world’s largest rodent, native to South America. Known for their calm nature and strong swimming ability, they are highly adaptable animals, which can make situations like this particularly challenging when they move beyond familiar surroundings.
At Direct Enviro Services, we are proud to support efforts where our expertise can make a real difference, combining technology, experience and a responsible approach to environmental management.
